How to decrypt ransomware encryted files and avoid paying hackers

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

Ransomware is a type of malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system, either by locking the system's screen or by locking the users' files unless a ransom is paid.

There has been a rise of this lately, thus the need to know how to decrypt them.

I recently helped some lecturers at an higher institute who fell victim to this in decrypting the files which were encrypted in .CRYPTED extension.
Due to this rise, a website called No More Ransom has been launched by the joint effort of the folks at Interpol, the Dutch police, Kaspersky and Intel, which offers a range of detection and decryption tools, as well as tips on how to protect your data from ransomware.

You can also upload your files to the site and check if any of the 160,000 decryption keys it has in its database can be used to unlock them.

Before you decrypt your files, make sure to have removed the virus.

How To Remove Ransomware Virus From Your PC

Step 1- Boot your computer in Safe mode with Networking by launching msconfig.exe from Start Menu

Step 2- Download and install Spy Hunter

Step 3- Scan your PC with Spy Hunter and Remove any detected virus.

Step 4- Reboot your system to normal

How to Decrypt your Files

In my case, i used the .CRYTED Nemucod tool at https://decrypter.emsisoft.com/

For other tools, visit https://www.nomoreransom.org

I believe these options would help you in unlocking your locked files.
