The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has
warned telecoms companies operating in the country to desist from
illegally implementing tariff plans the commission has not approved.
Okechukwu
Itanyi, executive commissioner of stakeholders management at the NCC
said this while speaking in Kaduna at the Commission’s Consumers
Outreach held at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He said the commission had received a large number of
complaints over arbitrary increases in charges by service providers and
said the NCC would not hesitate to punish errant operators, especially
those charging customers to use their customer service channels.
“We will sanction you [operators]. We have not approved such tariff on customers service care,” he said.
Itanyi asked subscribers to demand improved services from telecoms and
said if they are dissatisfied with what their network is providing they
can switch by taking advantage of Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which
he said was introduced with the goal of arming subscribers with the
freedom to choose the best network without losing their numbers.
